Hi! I'm in seventh grade right now and I want to do cross country in eighth grade. I did it in fifth grade, but not sixth and seventh. What should I do to get ready?

Hey! So glad you’re getting back into running! Check out one of my recent posts, it’s an article about success in cross country. Those are some great tips.

Just make sure you run most days over the summer and I guarantee you’ll come into the season more prepared than most middle schoolers. eat well, drink water, run a lot. And good luck, have fun! :)

if you’re ever feeling discouraged about track, or low on inspiration, read Once A Runner. don’t ask me why, just do it. it’s basically the most amazing book ever, and i’ve read a lot of running books, trust me.

i first read it last track season and it was so inspiring, so i just had a second read to pump myself up, and now i want to get out and run forever, and then go run a 3:50 mile….

Tips for a Successful XC Season from Lauren Fleshman
Run consistently 25-35 miles a week, with a rest day every week. This number is different for everyone based on what they’ve done in the past, but you can increase a little bit every year through high school and college.
SLEEP enough. This is the hardest thing to do in high school, but at least 5 days a week, you need to get good sleep or the training is pointless, your iron will go back down, and blahbadee-blah-blah bad news. Easier said than done I know, but make it happen.
DON’T TAKE SHORTCUTS. It will be tempting all year to get distracted by too-skinny girls having short term success. If you want to run in college like you say you do, you’ll want to have success that you can build on every year. Build your own confidence by not looking around at others too much and working with the body you have. It is hard work to do that, but in my opinion, THAT is the only success worth having.
Aim for a B+/A- diet (you don’t need an A+). A+ diets are not sustainable and they take so much focus that you can’t focus on your training and your happiness.
Brainwash yourself to be a bad-ass. “I LOVE to compete. I LOVE how I can tolerate pain. I am strong and tough and freaking awesome.” Every quality you need this season is inside you. You just have to bring it out with practice. Every morning, on your warmups, every night, say those things to yourself. Seriously. Pro athletes do it. It works.

Nothing feels better than a badass, sweaty workout. Or maybe coming back and peeling off your sweaty clothes and jumping in the shower and having the hot water soothe your proud muscles. Or maybe the feeling of the cold post-workout protein hit your lips and fuel your body. It also could be climbing into your bed at night, sore yet satisfied, knowing that you reached your daily goal. Or what about waking up the next morning as your feet take their first morning steps and feeling the hard workout ache that you earned. Go workout. Go be proud. Make yourself indecisive about what your favorite part about getting fit is.

"But the longer and farther I ran, the more I realized that what I was often chasing was a state of mind - a place where worries that seemed monumental melted away, where the beauty and timelessness of the universe, of the present moment, came into sharp focus."

Hey, so this is my second year doing track and my last race which is league finals is next week and this season was pretty bad because i injured my IT band and had to take a week off. My goal for the mile has been to brake 7 minutes and for the 2 mile its 15:30 and i haven't gotten those times which, makes me feel like im not a good runner and im so scared to push because of my injury. Any tips?

Hey there! Sorry I didn’t answer sooner.

Injuries suck. But they are also pretty much inevitable if you’re a runner. I get injured all the time, and it really hinders my progress. It’s really frustrating, but sometimes there’s nothing you can do. You have to alter your goals to be more realistic to your situation. You’re definitely not a bad runner! You need to let your body heal before you can make any big progress. Running hard through an injury will just make it worse. Ask you coach and doctor what to do, and don’t over-do it.

Sometimes you’ll have a bad season. I’m going through a pretty rough one right now. But things happen, and you just have to move on, and get healthy so you can progress with your running! Good luck! You’ll get those times next year if you work at it!

OH MY GOD 500 FOLLOWERS!! thanks so much everyone!!!!!! this is amazing. happy birthday to me, i guess! :)
